These two single-seat, side-spring vehicles, donated in 2003 by Lloyd Littlefield, grandson of Ira Littlefield, reflect a significant piece of New London's history.
One was owned by Dr. Anna Littlefield, first an artist and teacher at Colby Academy, but more significantly the first woman licensed to practice medicine in the State of New Hampshire. She opened her medical practice in 1896, and practiced for over 50 years. In the day when house calls were the norm, Dr. Anna, as most folks referred to her, drove herself in this carriage, which still shows the wear where wheel met body.
The other carriage was owned by her brother, Ira Littlefield, a local farmer and surveyor. Ira surveyed a significant proportion of the land in New London and environs; those surveys providing a baseline for subsequent real estate transactions.
